Prof. Dr. Achim Langenbucher PhD

Dr. Langenbucher was born 16 June 16, 1967 in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany.

Just as Wolfgang Haigis had done, he studied physics and electrical/optics engineering. After his studies in Erlangen, he started in 1992 at the Department of Ophthalmology in Erlangen with Prof. Naumann as a researcher and participated in all courses in ophthalmology just as all the residents. Then he made his doctoral thesis, his habilitation, and his PhD in ophthalmology (but is not an MD).

Therefore he had very good contact with Wolfgang for many years, Würzburg being only 90 km away from Erlangen.

Langenbucher had already acquired some distinction for his internationally respected scientific work during his time at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) where he finished his diploma degree in electrical engineering in 1992, a doctoral degree in 1995, his venia legendi in 2000, and his PhD degree in 2020.

In 2009, he established himself as Director of his “Institute of Experimental Ophthalmology” (XO) at Saarland-University (Germany), a first-class research institute covering the field of ophthalmology and ophthalmic optics. The scientific research and work spectrum of the XO is broad. In addition, its affiliation to the medical faculty, it is characterized by interdisciplinary and engineering science.

Since its inception, XO has broadened its scope. As Director of his institute, his research mainly focuses on IOLs, the development of individual intraocular implants, optical simulation and optical design, LASERs in ophthalmology, light-tissue-interaction, adaptive optics, ophthalmic examination equipment, and measurement of intraocular pressure.

As one of his major projects, he is the developer and founder of https://iolcon.org, an up-to-date internet-based, internationally available database which is the leading platform for optimized IOL constants and characteristics of IOLs, indispensable for all who deal with IOL power calculation. IOLCon is completely independent of devices, manufacturers, and ophthalmologists and is free-of-charge for ophthalmic surgeons. Recently, he included the “Lens Power Calculation Module” (LPCM) into IOLCon´s service to ophthalmic surgeons, providing them even more support when selecting the correct power of an IOL.

He has countless scientific publications and congress contributions. Reflecting his scientific impact in ophthalmology, he was included again in the “Power List 2024” published in “The Ophthalmologist” in 2024 (https://powerlist.theophthalmologist.com/achimlan1?ContactList=41). ResearchGate displays his significant scientific impact by its “Research Interest Score” currently standing at 4126, which is higher than 98% of all ResearchGate members.
